Of Clouds And Haze

The skies are a bit overcast in Muscat these days, and the beautiful rugged mountains are covered with a thin layer of haze till late afternoon. Despite all this, there is no respite from sweltering heat.
The Gulf News reports that a similar phenomenon was witnessed in and around Dubai too. This is what the weathermen in Dubai had to say: “The cloud cover was caused by winds pushing in monsoon clouds from the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea onto the Arabian Peninsula. The moisture-laden air and the hot temperature in Oman and UAE has created hazy conditions.”

Garden City Turns Crime City

Crime-related incidents on a rise in Bangalore. Reason — the growing disparity (read frustration) between the unemployed or lowly-paid locals and the well-to-do professionals representing IT, FMCG, Media, and Hospitality-related industries.

The so-called ‘underprivileged’ have a wrong notion that the upwardly mobile are raking in all the moolah and having fun at their cost. While they have to lick their wounds and watch them in frustration. A quick scan in any of the happening malls, Brigade Road or CMH Road, is enough to gauge the mood or might of the people with spending capacity. Adding to the woes are swanky gizmos, barrage of ATM cards, fast cars, and five-star lifestyle.

I would like to narrate an incident which happened while I was in Bangalore around May this year. I engaged an autorickshaw from HAL to Ulsoor, and since I spoke to the auto driver in chaste Kannada, he went ga-ga on how he feels elated that he is talking to a Kannadiga.

He had something to confess too. The driver said when a passenger comes to him and speaks to him in Hindi, Tamil or any other languages except Kannada, he gets a mighty thrill by charging them extra or talking to them for a ride, quite literally. He said if a Kannada-knowing person steps in, he is well behaved. If an autorickshaw driver’s attitude is this, then imagine the behaviour of people from much weaker sections.

Bangalore shut down for a few days after vandalism broke out soon after Dr. Rajkumar’s death a few months back. Miscreants with all the pent up ire, damaged buildings housing IT firms, set fire to hotels, damaged public property and brought public life to a stand still. This action had nothing to do with the sympathy or love for the matinee idol, rather it was targeted at people who they think have ‘robbed’ Bangalore from their hands.

A few days back, I read a report which said mugging incidents were on a rise, and IT employees were forcibly taken to ATM centres and made to withdraw cash at knife-point. The fear is such that people fear to travel alone in ring roads, peripheral roads, and any road that wears a deserted look in the night.

When will Bangalore return to its old self?

I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Three Cheers To Technorati

Technorati, the Internet search engine for weblogs, turned three a couple of days back. As a mark of celebration, an upgraded and colourful website is in place to make the site more appealing to non-bloggers too.
David Sifry, the founder and CEO of Technorati, quips: “If there’s one thing I’m sure of, after 20 years of building internet services and web businesses, it’s that we haven’t got it all right. We’re going to spend a lot of time listening to you, and fixing, tuning, and tweaking. What have we got wrong? What is still broken? Believe me, I have a list about 3 feet long of those! What have we missed?

‘Badshah’ of Blockbusters

Karan Johar rocks. I like his style of filmmaking. His ingredients to success –– simple storyline, brilliant acting and great music. From Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Kal Ho Naa Ho, he’s done it time and again. Although Karan has graduated from the Yash Chopra stables, his movies are not know for stunning locales. He believes in a few actors and manages to get the best out of them, every time. His much-awaited movie, Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna, is all slated for release soon.

Check this forward which landed in my mailbox sometime back:

Stumped By Phone Bills

Calls from landlines and mobiles in Oman to India are quite expensive. It costs around 240 baisa (around Rs. 25) per minute during peak hours and 220 baisa (around Rs.23) during off peak hours from a landline, and 20-30 baisa less via mobiles. The other way around –– from India to Oman –– is a mere Rs. 12 per minute. If you are not careful enough, then phone bills can surely burn a hole in your wallet at the end of the month.
