Lalu Turns Management Guru

This one is for Lalu baiters. The former Bihar Chief Minister will teach management at IIM-A, starting from next month. His achievement –– turnaround in fortunes of Indian Railways.

A report quotes Lalu stating: “My mother always told me not to handle a buffalo by its tail, but always catch it by its horns. And I have used that lesson in everything in my life, including the Railways.”

Some food… err… fodder for thought this!

World’s Greatest Driving Road

The Jebel Hafeet Mountain Road in United Arab Emirates is the greatest driving road in the world. Stretching for 11.5 km and climbing nearly 4,000 feet, it boasts of 60 bends and a surface so smooth that it would flatter a racetrack. The mountain spans the border with Oman and lies about 90 minutes’ drive south-east of the thriving city of Dubai.

War For Comments

339 comments for a single post! Sounds great? Not exactly if you scan through the comments ranging from physiology and anatomy of anchors to their personal life. Did someone say freedom of expression comes at a price?

For starters, War For News blog aims at providing behind-the-scenes activity in three television channels –– NDTV, IBN Live and Times Now.

Air Monopoly

I want Air Deccan to start operating flights to Oman and teach all the biggies (read Indian, Gulf Air, Oman Air) a lesson.

Reason?

A return fare to Europe from Muscat costs RO195 while a return fare to a South Indian location is priced at RO 205. A return fare to Cairo (Egypt) costs RO130 while a one-way trip to Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) is available for around RO135. Mind you, the flying time to Cairo is 4 hours and to Thiruvananthapuram is 3.5 hours.

How long the monopoly and fleecing will continue? My fingers are crossed…

What Is In A Name?

The popular ‘City Plaza’ retail stores in Al Khuwair turned ‘Centrepoint’ as part of its branding exercise, and the group opened its second outlet in Ruwi last week. I don’t understand why business groups go in for name/logo changes when the company is performing extremely well.

On the other hand, the highly successful Lulu Group has the dumbest logo and name I’ve ever come across. They continue to open new hypermarkets all over the Middle East every six months. Do we say they care two hoots for branding/positioning?

Microsoft Goes 3-D

When Google is going places can Microsoft be left behind? Microsoft has comes up with a software that will generate 3D models from a collection of disparate photographs.

The Photosynth system is supposed to work with any collection of photographs, not just ones that have been accurately measured and shot. The software analyses each photograph, looking for similarities, and then works out the position of the camera in relation to the subject (a building, for example). From this, it can build up a 3D model of the object.

The app will likely be web-based, and available later this year. Now, over to Google…
