Journey Cut Short

Two years back he came to Oman with big dreams and stated working as a steward with a leading vegetarian hotel group in Muscat. Hailing from a small town in Kodagu district in Karnataka, India, this man in his late 20s was full of enthusiasm and raw energy. Knowing that I hailed from the same district, he used to share his stories, experiences with me, and every time he made sure we were given the best dining experience whenever we visited the restaurant.

From what I gathered, he had started constructing his dream house in his native place, and it was almost nearing completion. Although he earned a meagre salary, his was proud of his achievement. When we went back to the hotel after a gap of 2-3 weeks, we were told that he had quit the place. Only yesterday, I learnt that he had a tiff with his Indian manager, and was sacked and sent back home the next day. I feel sad for this guy. I sincerely hope he lands up a decent job very soon in India.

When I embarked on my journey towards Muscat two years back, I was advised: “Beware of Indians in the managerial level in Oman. They the biggest enemies for Indians in the lower cadre.” How true!
