Same car, different design

Cars with the same brand name, same model have different designs when manufactured in different plants across the globe. While Toyota Corolla manufactured in Bangalore (India) looks very different from the ones manufactured in Japan, the same holds good for Hyundai Accent manufactured in Chennai (India) versus those ones from South Korea.

Indian Independence Day

It’s 60th Indian Independence Day tomorrow. On this eve, nursery kids of Indian School Muscat staged a show today, and my daughter was also part of it. The practice session for the speech-dance event was planned much in advance, around July last week, and daily my daughter’s class teacher used sent a note or two on the do’s and don’ts and other nitty-gritties. My wife went into a tizzy buying clothes, accessories for the event, and being a girl child made the shopping all the more difficult. It was quite an exciting event for us as this was our daughter’s numero uno stage show. I must admit it is fun watching those tiny tots perform.
Happy Independence Day to all!

Lunar eclipse in Oman on Aug. 28

The second total lunar eclipse of 2007 will be visible from Oman on August 28 after sunset. The eclipse will be visible from Australia, Japan, parts of Asia and most of the Americas. NASA has more details.

Is eclipse a bad omen?

Ancient Chaldeans believed that the eclipse was a display of the Moons wrath, and that famine, disease or natural disasters would follow. Babylonians went so far as to try to determine which quadrant of the Moon was most eclipsed (very obvious in a partial lunar eclipse), using the direction as a geographical indicator of who would suffer the worst consequences.

Customer is king – Part 2

I get a phone call from Dubai…

Lady From Pehla: Sir, our records show that you haven’t renewed your Pehla subscription from mid-April.

Moi: Yeah, I will do it soon. I am going on a holiday (that’s a blatant lie, I just returned from holidays last month).

LFP: We have some great deals for you. Why don’t you renew the subscription to avail the goodies. In case you’re traveling, we will put your subscription in sleep mode.

Moi: Have seen those ads. Thanks, will contact local Pehla chaps once I am back.

LFP: Ok, thanks (in a sad tone).

The truth is I’ve stopped using Pehla from April this year, and switched over to another service provider (your guess is as good as everyone’s guess). When I was a loyal and trusted Pehla user, forget a call from Dubai, no one bothered to inform me of the packages and deals. Now, I hear they are taking their customer service to new heights with SMSs and calls. Well, they better do if they want to stay in business.

Qatar to host AGCC meet this year

Unnatural weather conditions (read Gonu) has forced Oman to postpone this year’s AGCC meet supposed to be held in December. Instead, Sultanate will host 2008 edition of the meet. Doha will take over the responsibility from Oman this year. It makes sense to hold in Doha since the city witnessed a sea change in terms of modernization and facilities as the last edition of Asian Games was held there. Ultimately, Oman will have 16 more months to put things in order. Some relief for folks at Sheraton and Al Bustan hotels, none the least.
