Gulf Arabs risk heart attacks in Olympics – expert

DUBAI: A top cardiologist has warned television viewers in the United Arab Emirates to try to stay calm during the Olympics because they were particularly vulnerable to suffering heart attacks while watching sports.

Klaus Kallmayer, head of cardiology at City Hospital in Dubai and the German Heart Centre in Bremen, said cardiovascular incidents increase during sporting events as spectators get caught up in the moment. (more)

UAE will be competing in shooting, taekwondo, equestrian, judo, sailing, swimming and athletics. Do these events cause heart attacks? Pah, Pah! This cardiologist needs an urgent appointment with a psychologist.

Not to be left behind, Reuters headline reads “Gulf Arabs”, whereas the write-up aims at only UAE folks. Mindless exaggeration!

Citius, Altius, Fortius

The 16-year-old Buthaina Yaqoubi will represent Oman at the Bejing Olympics and she will compete in 100m sprint and long jump. Team Oman also includes Mohammed al Habsi (100m breaststroke), Abdullah al Souli (100m, 200m sprint) and Dad al Balushi (50m rifle men’s prone competition with 60 rounds).

Oman is a goldmine for moviemakers

A song sequence for the mega budget Tamil movie, Kandaswamy, is presently being shot in different parts of Oman, including Oman Dive Centre, Al Sawadi, Sohar beach, Qantab and Yacht Club. The movie features Vikram and Shriya Saran (pics below) in lead roles. (more details)

With its pristine beaches, magical mountains, and green cover, Oman is a goldmine for moviemakers. I wouldn’t be surprised if more and more producers from India add Oman to their scheme of things. Nations like Switzerland, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore are going that extra mile to woo Indian moviemakers by doling out all kinds of sops. The list is growing by the day.

Even Dubai has joined the bandwagon. A report says:

Dubai is fast becoming an international hub for Bollywood films outside India for premieres and making of movies. Several Bollywood movies have been premiered in Dubai last year and the latest in the series was Kismat Konnection, which premiered three days ago.

Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan or Salman Khan is a household name not only for the Indians but also for the Arabic speaking people. “Dubai has a big Indian expatriate community. But Bollywood films are popular among the Arab-speaking people as well. This makes Dubai is a perfect overseas venue for Bollywood premieres,” says Aziz Mirza, director of Kismat Konnection, which premiered in Dubai three days ago.
If the ‘concrete’ Dubai can pull it off, why not the ‘blessed’ Oman? With more infrastructure facilities for movie making at their disposal, Oman can be crowned as the most sought after destination.
