5 Indians killed in accident near Jabal Al Akhdar

Five Indians were killed and six hurt when the Land Cruiser in which they were travelling lost control and plunged into a ravine in Jabal Al Akhdar on October 3, 2008. The Indians, hailing from the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, were returning back in the evening when the tragedy struck. It is suspected the vehicle suffered brake failure at the final hairpin bend just before the check point. Sources also claimed that over-speeding could be one of the reasons for the accident. The injured are out of danger.

A report said:

MUSCAT: The ill-fated Land Cruiser that slipped into a ravine near Jabal Al Akhdar on Friday, apparently fell prey to a sudden brake failure that resulted in five people dying on the spot and six being injured including two children.

“The vehicle was just reaching the last turn before the checkpoint when the accident took place. The vehicle fell over and was damaged on all sides,” said an eyewitness who wished not to be named. The rented four-wheeler had apparently suffered a brake failure and to avert a collision with other approaching vehicles, the driver hit the cement barricade and the vehicle rolled over and fell around twenty feet down into a ravine, the witness added.

All the unfortunate holiday-goers, who happened to be friends and relatives, were from the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, and employees of Mase Marketing, Oman Fisheries, Bahwan IT, Port Services and Worley Parsons, according to sources.

Those killed in the accident were identified as Sreenivas Narayanan, Vijay K. Subramanyan, Sukanya Amarnath, Jayalakshmi Radhakrishnan and Priya Ramesh. Arrangements are being made to send the bodies of the dead to their homeland.

The six injured in the accident are recovering at the Nizwa Referral Hospital. Some of them are being treated for multiple wounds including head injuries. They include P. R. Radhakrishnan, Amarnath (he is able to walk now), Ramesh and Karthik. Supraja Ramesh and Vanushika Radhakrishnan were the children injured in the accident. The witnesses said that the local Omani people were very helpful in rescuing and taking the victims to the hospital. They also praised the services of the Nizwa Referral Hospital.

It maybe recalled that during the Eid holidays last year, a nine-year-old Indian girl had died in a car crash near Nizwa.

That is so bad. I feel sorry for the families involved. If its brake failure, then even the rent-a-car company is at fault here.

Very sad. The worst part is two mothers perished leaving behind tiny little kids and husbands behind.

As you rightly said, fingers will be pointed at the rent-a-car company, ABC in this case. It is said these companies care seldom for regular servicing and maintenance, making it hazardous to travel in their vehicles to places like Jabal Akhdar.

Sad to hear so many people perished, but before we start pointing fingers let's read the news item a bit more closely. It mentions only one car and it says 5 people died and 6 were injured. This means there were 11 people in this one car!!!

Regardless of the state of the car's repairs, it's dangerous to cram so many people into one car. It means more than half the people in it weren't wearing seat belts.

If the driver was inexperienced, he probably was using the brakes all the way down the jabal which could be the reason why they failed. For such a long and steep incline you must rely on low gear, not brakes.

You've made some very valid points.

May the departed souls rest in peace.

Jabals of Oman pose a great challenge to even experienced drivers and one has to be extremely cautious on the mountain tracks. People assume that 4WDs, especially Land Cruisers can do anything and drive carelessly. I've seen people driving at maddening speeds on those tracks and I used to pray nothing happens to those. I wish the town authorities put more warning/caution signs and speed bumps all over the track; forcing drivers to drive at lower speeds.

A holiday vacation shouldn't end like this - Lives are lost; I feel sad for those who lost their family members. My prayers for them.

Looks like poor driving skills and over crowding were responsible for this mishap.

The break failure in this case could be due to two reasons.
1. The vehicle was not serviced and the breaks were in very bad state.

2. The driver did not control the cruiser using low gears and used the breaks during the descent.

We stay in Dubai and had been to Jabal Akdhar in my Daihatsu Terios 4wd on the same day this tragedy happened. In such steep slopes , it is very important that you control the speed with low gears . (2nd or even 1st) during the descent. Breaks should be used only when absolutely necessary.

It was a very sad incident
