Deadline to meet?

I clicked this photo at 6.45pm the other day in Ruwi (actually it was much darker than it is in the photo). I am not sure about the local construction rules, but seriously what kind of quality concrete filling work can be carried out at this hour, without any lighting arrangements? Should we assume greedy owners and contractors are throwing safety rules down the drain?

Beauty…sans the beholder!

Where are the customers? (Photo: AAF)
RAMBLER’S DIARY writes: Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, they say. We agree too. But what if there is beauty but no beholder. At least that is what the exhibitors at the International Jewellery Exhibition feel on the first day. Even three hours after the exhibition had been officially declared open, exhibitors still found themselves waiting for customers to visit their stalls and appreciate the beauty of the art of jewellery … let alone purchase it. Oman they say is least affected by international financial crisis. Well, the international exhibitors would beg to differ … We have four days to convince them. The countdown has already begun.

Omantel blocks Google Scholar

Received this mail today from a Foundation Programme Coordinator at one of the College of Applied Sciences in Oman.

The importance of education in Oman’s development is a matter of which the nation is aware at all levels. As an educator and researcher who has been based here for several years, I am acutely aware of the value access to quality information has for Omani students. Due to the dearth of academic books and libraries in the country, the tertiary education sector is largely dependent on the Internet in this respect. While search engines such as Google offer general information, academic research is enabled far more effectively by the research-specific Google Scholar website (http://scholar.google.com/schp).

To my great shock I have discovered that this website –– perhaps one of the most vital to research development in this emerging nation –– has been blocked by Omantel for the past week (http://www.omantel.net.om/new5.html?category=Pornography). Although I have emailed the company for a reversal of the decision, there has been no response as yet, and five calls to the company’s internet helpline have delivered no satisfactory explanation.

The implications of disabling one of the most powerful research tools available –– and one of the few available in Oman –– send shivers down the spine of any academic community this nation may aspire to. While the World Wide Web teems with morally dubious potential, this is not usually the concern of desiccated academics such as ourselves.

Information, of course, is a dangerous thing. However, we have to weigh that up against the greater danger of the lack of information. Yet the greatest peril of all is the lack of wisdom to select and use information wisely. That is the peril that actions such as these –– justifiably –– inspire.

What’s in a name?

This is the optical mouse I have been using in office for the last three years. My finger and palm imprints on it are a proof for the kind of usage this poor thing has withstood all this while. The mouse –– belonging to a not-so-popular company called Savvy –– has been very efficient and has never let me down. I have tried Logitech and Microsoft mouses, but nothing beats the comfort and efficiency of a Savvy mouse.

Next James Bond movie will be shot in Oman

It is official. The next James Bond flick will be shot extensively in Oman. The spokesman for the production house, who wished to remain anonymous like the 007 superhero, said the shooting will start from November this year. He said the exploration team which was here for the last two months had undertaken extensive research on locales around Muscat, and was very impressed with the terrain, landscapes and facilities.

According to sources, a fighter jet action scene will be shot in Qantab valley and an exclusive 30-minute car chasing scene on the highway. The spokesman said the team was very impressed with the congestion and bumper-to-bumper traffic at peak hours, and had zeroed in on exact location for the car chase act. He went on to add they were impressed with the amazing driving skills of locals and assured the team wouldn’t require professional stunt drivers from abroad.

“We have witnessed action at peak hours. Their reckless maneuvering and zig-zag driving is tailor-made for our storyline. Local drivers certainly outdo professional stunt drivers by all standards. The chase scene requires a total disregard for traffic rules, and their attitude fits perfectly,” he quipped. The spokesperson also went on to add that Daniel Craig will be here soon with his chicas to shortlist locations for his trademark steamy scenes. Bored with bedrooms, Daniel has evinced interest to shoot the hot scenes in Salalah forests this time around, it is learnt.
