Oman Twestival 2010
On Thursday, March 25, 2010, Muscat will join people in hundreds of cities around the world for a noble cause by hosting a Twestival (or Twitter Festival). The event is 100% organized by volunteers. And, Muscat is doing the event in style. The Twestival will held on-board the world’s fastest ferry — Hormuz.

No smoking in public places
MUSCAT: Come April 2, people caught smoking in no-smoking zones will have to shell out between RO100 and RO300 as Muscat Municipality begins to clamp down on violators.
Owners of places, where the smoking ban is enforced, will not only be fined between RO100 and RO300 but also face the prospect of their establishments being closed for three to seven days.
The ban, under rule 2010/33, will be enforced at all public places falling under the jurisdiction of Muscat Municipality Qais bin Sulaiman Al Kusheri, manager, health department, said no-smoking zones have been identified and their owners directed to follow instructions strictly.
Owners of no-smoking zones have been asked to prominently display signboards (in Arabic and English) to this effect; they have been directed to remove ashtrays.

The concert, which started at 8pm dot, winded up at 10pm. It rocked in every possible way. Hats off to the organizers for putting up such a splendid show – they were far more superior than so called professional event management companies of Oman. They took take of every minute detail. From the stage to seating to ambience to food, everything was perfect.
We need action, not mere verbal volleys
MUSCAT: The Royal Oman Police (ROP), in coordination with the traffic authorities of other GCC states, is organising the 26th ‘Road Safety Week’ from March 15.There will be a number of awareness campaigns, seminars, workshops and lectures by experts as part of the traffic week, besides joint efforts in exchanging ideas and expertise among the GCC countries.
This time around, the ROP wants to send out the message “Beware of other people’s
mistakes” in a bid to inculcate defensive driving. Road accidents in Oman are among the highest in the world when compared to the population figures. The number of fatal accidents has also reached alarming levels with more than 1,000 people losing their lives in 2009 in over 7,500 accidents. The dead included pedestrians.
Apart from the alarming number of deaths last year, nearly 11,000 people were injured, many suffering serious head and spinal injuries resulting in death in hospitals.
I have a suggestion for ROP. They should cancel the driving licence of offenders for a certain period. This will work like magic. People can pay the traffic fines or refuse to pay, but they cannot take the frustration of not being able to drive.
